Questions about pyeong
How many square meters is 1 pyeong?
1 pyeong is exactly 400/121 m², which is about 3.3058 m² or 35.58 sq ft. In the other direction, 1 m² is 0.3025 pyeong.
What is the difference between exclusive area and supply area?
In Korean apartments, exclusive area is the space inside your own unit, such as rooms, living room, kitchen, and bathrooms. Supply area adds your share of residential common space, such as stairs, corridors, and elevators. The same home therefore has two numbers, and the supply area is the larger one.
Why is an 84 m² apartment called a 34-pyeong type?
84 m² is 25.41 pyeong. The number 84 m² in a sale notice is usually the exclusive area, while the everyday name "34 pyeong" usually comes from the supply area, which is about 112 m². The supply area differs from one complex to another, so check the notice of the home you are looking at.
Is pyeong an official unit?
No. The legal unit of area in Korea is the square meter, and since July 2007 the government has restricted the use of pyeong in trade and advertising. People still use it in daily speech. The Japanese tsubo and the Taiwanese ping (both written 坪) are the same size, 400/121 m².
Can I use the result in a contract?
Use it as a reference only. For a contract or registration, check the area in square meters written in the official records. Also check whether a figure means supply area or exclusive area before you compare two homes.
How does the tool read commas and periods?
It follows the number format of the page language. On this English page, a comma separates thousands and a period is the decimal mark, so 1,234 means 1234 and 1,234.5 means 1234.5. When both appear, the last one is the decimal mark, so 1.209,84 is also read as 1209.84. A single comma that is not followed by exactly three digits is read as a decimal mark, so 84,97 means 84.97.
