ISO B5 and JIS B5

JIS B5 (182 × 257 mm) is 6 mm wider and 7 mm taller than ISO B5 (176 × 250 mm).

When a product says only "B5", check which standard it uses.

Sizes are the fixed values of ISO 216, JIS P 0138, and ANSI/ASME Y14.1.

Millimeters are the defined values for A and B sizes. Inches are the defined values for Letter, Legal, and Tabloid.

The printed result depends on printer margins and driver settings. Use the scale as a guide.

How to use the paper size converter

  1. Check the country. The standard paper of that country is selected first.
  2. Search for a paper size or pick one, then choose portrait or landscape.
  3. Choose a DPI to see the size in pixels, and copy the result.
  4. To print on another paper size, choose the document size and the paper in the printer, then read the scale.
  5. For B5, compare the ISO and JIS outlines and pick the one that matches your product.

What are paper sizes?

A paper size is a standard width and height for a sheet of paper, such as A4 (210 × 297 mm) or Letter (8.5 × 11 in). Printers, binders, envelopes, and document templates are all made for these standard sizes.

Two systems are in everyday use. Most countries use the ISO 216 A series, where A4 is the office standard. The United States and Canada use Letter, Legal, and Tabloid, which are defined in inches. Japan also uses the JIS B series, which is larger than the ISO B series of the same number.

How sizes, pixels, and print scale are calculated

  • An A0 sheet has an area of 1 square meter and sides in the ratio 1 to the square root of 2. Each next size is the previous one cut in half, so A4 is 210 × 297 mm.
  • Letter is 8.5 × 11 in, which is 215.9 × 279.4 mm. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm.
  • Pixels are millimeters divided by 25.4 and multiplied by the DPI, rounded to the nearest whole number. A4 at 300 DPI is 2480 × 3508 px.
  • The print scale is the smaller of two ratios: target width over source width, and target height over source height. A4 on Letter is 94%, and Letter on A4 is 97%.
  • JIS B5 is 182 × 257 mm and ISO B5 is 176 × 250 mm, because JIS B0 has an area of 1.5 square meters and ISO B0 is 1000 × 1414 mm.

When to use it

  • Printing an A4 PDF on Letter paper, or a Letter template on A4, without cutting off the edges.
  • Setting the canvas size in pixels for a document that will be printed at 300 DPI.
  • Checking whether a B5 notebook, binder, or printer tray is ISO B5 or JIS B5.
  • Formatting a résumé or a form for the standard paper of another country.

Questions about paper sizes

What is the difference between A4 and Letter?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm, and Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm. A4 is 5.9 mm narrower and 17.6 mm taller. An A4 page printed on Letter at full size loses its top or bottom edge, and a Letter page printed on A4 loses its side edges.

What scale do I use to print A4 on Letter?

Use 94%. The height decides the scale: 279.4 ÷ 297 is about 0.941. For a Letter document on A4, use 97%, because 210 ÷ 215.9 is about 0.973. The tool rounds the scale down to a whole percent so that nothing is cut off.

How many pixels is A4 at 300 DPI?

A4 at 300 DPI is 2480 × 3508 pixels. Letter at 300 DPI is 2550 × 3300 pixels. At 72 DPI, A4 is 595 × 842 pixels and Letter is 612 × 792 pixels.

Is B5 the same size everywhere?

No. ISO B5 is 176 × 250 mm, and JIS B5 is 182 × 257 mm, which is 6 mm wider and 7 mm taller. Notebooks and printers in Japan use JIS B5. Products in other countries can use either one, so check the size in millimeters when a label says only "B5".

Why are the inch values of A4 not round numbers?

The A series is defined in millimeters, so its inch values are rounded: A4 is about 8.27 × 11.69 in. Letter, Legal, and Tabloid are defined in inches, so their millimeter values have a decimal, such as 215.9 mm.

Will my printer print exactly at this scale?

Not always. Most printers cannot print to the edge of the sheet, and the driver can add its own margins or a "fit to page" setting. Use the scale as a guide and check the print preview.
