This is one table that is common at Korean universities. Grade points and score ranges differ from school to school, so check your own school's rules.

How to use the Korean GPA converter

  1. Choose the maximum of your own GPA: 4.5, 4.3, 4.0, or 100.
  2. Type your GPA.
  3. Choose the scale you want to convert to.
  4. Compare the proportional value and the grade table value, then press Copy under the one you need.

What is a Korean GPA scale?

A Korean GPA scale is the maximum grade point that a Korean university uses for its grade point average: 4.5, 4.3, 4.0, or 100 points. The maximum differs from school to school, so 3.8 out of 4.5 and 3.8 out of 4.3 are different results.

Korea has no single rule for changing a GPA from one scale to another. Each university has its own grade table, and each employer, graduate school, or evaluation agency can use its own method. That is why a converted GPA is a reference value, and why the original number is usually written next to it.

How the two values are calculated

  • The proportional value is GPA ÷ own maximum × new maximum. 3.80 out of 4.5 is 3.80 ÷ 4.5 × 4.0 = 3.38 out of 4.0.
  • The grade table value uses the nine grades that all four scales share (A+, A0, B+, B0, C+, C0, D+, D0, F) as fixed points. On the 100-point scale the fixed point is the lowest score of the grade, such as 90 for A0.
  • A GPA between two fixed points keeps its relative position. 3.80 out of 4.5 is 60% of the way from B+ (3.5) to A0 (4.0). On the 4.0 scale B+ is 3.3 and A0 is 4.0, so the value is 3.3 + 0.6 × 0.7 = 3.72.
  • A full score becomes the lowest value of A+, and a score that two grades share is read as the lower grade. So 4.5 out of 4.5 becomes 95 out of 100, and 4.0 out of 4.0 is read as A0. A score below D0, the lowest passing grade, is read as F and becomes 0.
  • Results are rounded half up to two decimal places, or to one decimal place on the 100-point scale.

When to use it

  • A job application asks for your GPA out of 4.5 but your school uses 4.3.
  • You want a rough idea of your Korean GPA on the 4.0 scale before you apply to a school abroad.
  • A form has a percentage field and your transcript shows only a grade point average.
  • You want one line such as 3.80/4.5 (≈3.38/4.0) to paste into a résumé.

Questions about converting a Korean GPA

How do I convert a 4.5 GPA to the 4.0 scale?

The simplest way is to multiply by 4.0 and divide by 4.5. A GPA of 3.80 out of 4.5 becomes 3.38 out of 4.0. The grade table gives a different number, 3.72, because an A0 is worth 4.0 on both scales. This page shows both, and neither one is a standard.

Why are the proportional value and the grade table value different?

The proportional value treats the whole scale as one straight line, so every GPA shrinks or grows by the same ratio. The grade table value compares grades with grades. A B+ is 3.5 on the 4.5 scale and 3.3 on the 4.3 scale, so a GPA near B+ moves by a different amount than a GPA near A+.

Which value should I write on an application?

Follow the instructions of the place you apply to. If it gives a formula or a table, use that and not this page. If it gives nothing, write your original GPA with its maximum first and add the converted value as a reference, for example 3.80/4.5 (≈3.38/4.0). When the number matters, ask the school or employer which method it accepts.

Is this the result that an evaluation agency such as WES would give?

No. Credential evaluation agencies, of which WES is one example, read each course on the transcript and apply their own rules. This page converts only one average with a simple formula and one grade table. It has no connection with any agency, school, or employer, and its result can differ from theirs.

Is the GPA I type sent to a server?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and the GPA you type is not sent or saved. Only the two scales you chose last are kept in your browser so that they are selected on your next visit.
