Questions about splitting a bill

How is each share rounded?

You choose a rounding unit (1, 10, 100, or 1,000 of the smallest currency unit) and a direction: up, nearest, or down. For dollars, the smallest unit is one cent. Each person's amount is rounded one time, after all of their items are added together.

What is the rounding difference?

It is the total minus the sum of the rounded shares. A negative number means the group collects more than the bill. A positive number means the group collects less. The calculator always shows this number, so everyone can check the sums.

What does "Organizer covers it" do?

The rounding difference is added to the amount of one person, the organizer. Then the sum of all shares equals the total. If money is left over, the organizer pays less. If money is short, the organizer pays more. In By item mode, the organizer is the first person in the list.

How is the tip calculated?

The tip is a percentage of the sum of the items. It is added to the total before the split. In By item mode, each person pays tip in proportion to the items they shared. The currency symbol only changes the display. The calculator does not convert currencies.

What happens to an item with nobody checked?

The calculator leaves the item out and tells you so in the result. Check one person or more to include the item.

Can I send money or enter bank details here?

No. The result is for reference only. The calculator has no payment or transfer function. Do not enter account numbers. The amounts and names you enter stay in your browser and are not sent to a server.
